MY GRADUATION: Mirai

MY GRADUATION: Mirai is an NHK-produced documentary series that captures the transitional periods of students as they navigate the conclusion of their academic chapters. Developed as a meditative look at coming-of-age in Japan, the production utilizes the studio's observational style to document the emotional weight and social expectations surrounding school graduation ceremonies. It serves as a visual archive of contemporary educational experiences, balancing the personal intimacy of individual stories with the broader societal rituals inherent in the Japanese school system.

The visual approach of the series was crafted by NHK's documentary unit, which prioritized a fly-on-the-wall perspective to minimize the intrusion of the camera during high-stakes personal moments. By focusing on the candid reactions and quiet reflections of the subjects, the creators aimed to humanize the often rigid process of moving from adolescence into adulthood. Upon release, the series was well-received for its empathetic tone and its ability to act as a poignant social commentary on the psychological milestones that define the youth experience in modern Japan.
