Nanatsu no Umi

Nanatsu no Umi, or Seven Seas, was produced by NHK as part of their broader initiative to provide educational and culturally enriching programming for younger audiences. Released in the late 20th century, the series utilized the studio's mandate for high-quality animation to explore themes of discovery and global geography, positioning itself within a tradition of Japanese public broadcasting that sought to blend narrative entertainment with an informative spirit.

The visual design of the series reflects the classic aesthetic sensibilities of NHK productions from that era, prioritizing clean lines and character-focused storytelling. The production team aimed to capture the sense of wonder associated with maritime exploration, employing traditional cel animation techniques that were standard for the studio at the time. It remains a representative example of the institutional commitment to animation that served both an artistic and a pedagogical purpose in Japanese domestic television.
