Nasu: A Migratory Bird with Suitcase

Nasu: A Migratory Bird with Suitcase was produced by the acclaimed studio Madhouse in 2007 as a sequel to the 2003 film Nasu: Summer in Andalusia. Directed and written by Kitaro Kosaka, who had previously collaborated extensively with Hayao Miyazaki at Studio Ghibli, the film shifts the focus from the sweltering heat of Spanish cycling races to the more contemplative, nomadic life of professional cyclist Pepe Benengeli. The production aimed to capture the quiet, rhythmic beauty of the sport, moving away from the high-octane spectacle typical of sports anime toward a character-driven narrative that emphasizes atmosphere and the internal life of an athlete.

The film's aesthetic design is heavily influenced by Kosaka's background in traditional animation, prioritizing fluid, naturalistic movement and a muted, earthy color palette that mirrors the landscapes of the professional cycling circuit. Critics and viewers alike have praised the work for its technical precision and its departure from genre conventions, noting that it functions more as a slice-of-life vignette than a traditional competition story. By focusing on the isolation and camaraderie found within the migratory cycle of the racing season, the creative team successfully distinguished the work as a mature, introspective addition to their studio's legacy.
