Pepe is a Spanish cyclist competing in the Vuelta a España, a multi-stage Iberian cycling race similar to the Tour de France. He is a support rider for one of the teams competing in the race, and his role is to assist the team's top rider in winning the overall race. As the story unfolds, the racers are set to ride through Pepe's home town in Andalusia on the same day as the wedding of his elder brother Ángel to his former girlfriend Carmen. Their relationship was a factor in his decision to leave the town to pursue professional cycling, and the wedding is a frustrating reminder that his career hasn't turned out as he would have liked. Now, with the sponsor planning to drop him from the team and his family and friends cheering him on, Pepe abandons his assigned role and strives for glory.

Where it came from
Nasu: Summer in Andalusia was produced by the acclaimed studio Madhouse and released in 2003 as an adaptation of the manga Nasu by Iou Kuroda. Directed by Kitaro Kosaka, a veteran animator known for his long-standing collaboration with Studio Ghibli, the film was designed as a meditative, grounded character piece rather than a traditional action-oriented anime. It captures the specific atmosphere of a professional cycling race set against the sweltering heat of the Spanish countryside, emphasizing the rhythmic physical labor of the sport.
The project is notable for its deliberate departure from the typical aesthetic trends of the early 2000s, favoring a painterly, atmospheric approach that prioritizes landscape and motion over elaborate character tropes. The creative team aimed to ground the narrative in the visceral sensations of heat and exhaustion, utilizing detailed hand-drawn animation to replicate the mechanics of road racing. Upon its release, the film was received as a sophisticated, niche work of art, praised for its restraint and the technical precision of its cycling sequences.
