Natsu e no Tobira

Natsu e no Tobira, released in 1981, is a feature-length animated adaptation based on the classic 1956 science fiction novel The Door into Summer by Robert A. Heinlein. Produced by the acclaimed animation studio Madhouse, the project emerged during a period of rising Japanese interest in adapting influential Western science fiction literature for the screen, aiming to translate Heinlein's complex narrative regarding cryonics and time travel into a visually cohesive cinematic format.

The film was directed by Mamoru Hamatsu, who sought to capture the melancholic and hopeful tone of the original text through the studio's signature intricate cel animation style. While the film is noted by scholars for its historical role in the intersection of American science fiction and the Japanese animation industry of the early 1980s, it received a modest critical reception upon release, ultimately becoming a niche piece of animation history that highlights the era's ambition to explore mature, non-traditional genres within the medium.
