Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind

Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind was released in 1984, directed by Hayao Miyazaki and produced by Topcraft, a studio that would later form the core of Studio Ghibli. The film was adapted from Miyazaki’s own manga series, which began serialization in Animage magazine in 1982. Its creation was driven by a desire to explore complex themes of environmentalism, pacifism, and the relationship between humanity and nature, moving away from the prevailing trend of simple action-oriented animation of the time.

The aesthetic of the film was heavily influenced by Miyazaki’s interest in post-apocalyptic settings and European folk motifs, characterized by the iconic glider design and the surreal, fungal landscapes of the Sea of Decay. Although the studio credited for its production was Topcraft—with Studio Hibari providing subcontracted animation assistance—the film is widely regarded as the foundational masterpiece of the Ghibli era. Upon release, it received critical acclaim for its intricate world-building and narrative depth, eventually serving as the catalyst for the official founding of Studio Ghibli in 1985.
