The year is 2130 and the world has been decimated by a devastating third world war, making the planet a dangerous, apocalyptic hellhole. There is, however, one hope: Adam Blade, a fake priest with big fists and a nasty disposition. He's the closest thing this world's got to a superhero, but like any superhero, he has a weakness. In Adam's case, it isn't Kryptonite; it's cuties in sexy little outfits, usually of the schoolgirl variety.

Where it came from
Needless was produced by the acclaimed animation studio Madhouse and premiered in 2009 as a television series adaptation of the manga by Kami Imai. Set in a post-apocalyptic Tokyo that has been transformed into a wasteland known as the Black Spot, the series follows individuals gifted with superhuman abilities, known as 'Needless,' who fight against the oppressive Simeon Corporation. The narrative was conceived during a period of high output for Madhouse, building on the studio's reputation for visceral, fast-paced action sequences that blend dark humor with supernatural combat.
The character designs and visual direction emphasized bold, kinetic aesthetics meant to mirror the frantic energy of Imai's original source material. Directed by Masayuki Sakoyoshi, the production sought to distinguish itself through its eclectic cast of characters and a tone that shifted rapidly between absurd comedy and serious conflict. Upon its release, it was noted for its unique visual flair and stylized violence, cementing its place as a representative action-fantasy title from the late 2000s era of the studio's catalog.
