Where it came from
Nekko-kun originated as a mascot character developed by NHK, the Japanese public broadcaster, to engage younger audiences and add a touch of whimsy to their programming. Designed to embody the playful and curious nature of a domestic cat, the character was crafted with a minimalist aesthetic that prioritizes accessibility and charm, fitting seamlessly into the studio's broader efforts to humanize its educational and entertainment initiatives.
The design of Nekko-kun reflects the traditional Japanese approach to 'yuru-chara' or mascot culture, focusing on rounded, friendly features and a simple color palette that makes the character highly recognizable on screen. Since its introduction, the character has served as a recurring visual touchpoint within NHK's broadcasts, frequently appearing in digital segments and promotional materials where it acts as a silent, relatable observer for viewers of all ages.
