Where it came from
Neko Funjatta, which translates to I Stepped on the Cat, is a beloved musical segment originally introduced by NHK for its long-running children's program Minna no Uta. Created in the 1960s, the song is a Japanese adaptation of the internationally known piano melody commonly referred to as the Flea Waltz. Its inclusion in the NHK programming archive solidified its status as a staple of Japanese childhood, characterized by its playful, repetitive melody and whimsical animated visuals.
The animation and presentation were designed to match the lighthearted, rhythmic nature of the composition. By framing the piece through NHK's studio production, the segment aimed to turn a simple piano exercise into an engaging narrative experience for young viewers. Upon its release, it became a cultural touchstone in Japan, frequently re-aired and adapted, ultimately becoming one of the most recognizable piano pieces in the country's popular culture.
