Where it came from
Neko Neko Fantasia was produced by Anime International Company (AIC) and released as an original video animation (OVA) in 1991. Emerging during the height of the bubble-era anime market, the project reflected a period when studios frequently experimented with lighthearted, character-driven fantasy stories to capitalize on the growing direct-to-video market. It fits within a broader trend of short-form, whimsical productions designed to showcase character design aesthetics.
The production sought to blend traditional fantasy tropes with a playful, comedic tone, prioritizing visual charm and a light narrative structure. Because the OVA was a niche release rather than a major studio tentpole, it was met with modest attention, primarily circulating among fans of 1990s experimental animation. It remains a footnote in the extensive AIC filmography, appreciated mainly by enthusiasts of the specific character design styles common to that era of Japanese animation.
