New Gods: Nezha Reborn

New Gods: Nezha Reborn was released in 2021 by Light Chaser Animation, marking a significant evolution in the studio’s approach to Chinese mythology. The film reimagines the classic deity Nezha within a dieselpunk, 1920s-inspired metropolis called Donghai City, trading traditional folklore settings for high-octane vehicular combat and industrial aesthetics. This stylistic departure was intended to modernize ancient legends for a younger, tech-savvy generation while maintaining the core themes of rebellion and identity that have defined the character for centuries.

Director Zhao Ji and the production team aimed to bridge the gap between traditional Chinese storytelling and contemporary global animation standards. By blending steampunk technology with mythological powers, the film sought to carve out a unique visual identity distinct from other popular adaptations of the same source material. Upon its release, the film was noted by critics for its ambitious technical achievements in character animation and its fast-paced, genre-bending narrative, further establishing Light Chaser Animation as a major force in the Chinese animation industry.
