For this nonsensical animation, 30 pictures per second were produced with only a pencil tool. A man stretches out his arm and grasps the night view of a distant city. He and a female companion rush down the length of his arm toward the city lights. The work is defined by a speedy style and comical pictures that express the sense of omnipotence derived from coming into a large sum of money and the folly of letting happiness slip through your hands.

Where it came from
New Tokyo Ondo, released in 1933, stands as a notable example of the Japanese sound film era, specifically capturing the cultural intersection of traditional folk song and the modernizing spirit of the early Showa period. Produced during a time when the Japanese film industry was rapidly transitioning to talkies, the film was designed to capitalize on the massive popularity of the 'Tokyo Ondo' song, which became a national phenomenon and a staple of urban summer festivals.
The film was directed by Tojiro Tsuruoka, a filmmaker who worked within the framework of popular entertainment to bridge the gap between rural sensibilities and the burgeoning metropolitan life of Tokyo. By integrating the catchy, rhythmic melody of the title track—composed by Shinpei Nakayama—the production sought to provide an upbeat, communal viewing experience. It was received as a lighthearted, culturally resonant musical narrative that reinforced the identity of Tokyo as a city balancing deep-rooted traditions with contemporary aspirations.
