Where it came from
Newsong was released in 1981 by the American folk-pop duo The Burns Sisters, marking an early entry in their long-standing career as harmony-focused vocalists. The album emerged from the rich, acoustic-driven musical traditions of the era, emphasizing a raw, unfiltered approach to songwriting and vocal arrangement that favored authentic storytelling over the heavy studio production becoming prevalent at the time.
The album's design and aesthetic reflect the understated, folk-oriented sensibilities of the early 1980s independent music scene. It was received by critics as a sincere project that showcased the sisters' distinct vocal blending and their commitment to traditional songcraft, establishing a template for their sound that would carry through their subsequent decades of performing and recording.
