Short movie made in memory of filmmaker Sadao Yamanaka.
When Edo is shrouded in darkness at night, a man appears rustling in the attic. He is Nezumi Kozō Jirokichi, a chivalrous thief who takes wealth from a wealthy man and gives it to the poor.
The characters that add colour to the human drama that unfolds in the streets of Edo are Suzu, a merchant who has lost her husband and lives a hard life with her small child; Bonji, Yasugoro and Chogoro, who try to use Suzu to expose Nezumi Kozou’s true identity; and the two other characters, Kan’emon, an experienced detective who hate the sin but love people… this is what Film director Sadao Yamanaka dreams up.

Where it came from
Nezumikozou Jirokichi is a cinematic project associated with Studio M2, the animation studio founded by veteran producer Masao Maruyama. The film draws its inspiration from the legendary historical figure of the same name, a real-life Edo-period thief who became a folk hero in Japanese folklore for his supposed Robin Hood-like redistribution of wealth. The narrative centers on this iconic outlaw, grounding his swashbuckling exploits within the traditional aesthetic and storytelling framework associated with jidaigeki, or period dramas.
The film represents a commitment by Studio M2 to explore classic Japanese cultural narratives through refined animation techniques. By focusing on the mythos of Nezumikozou, the production aims to balance historical intrigue with the stylized action characteristic of the studio’s output. While the project is part of a broader effort to revitalize historical legends for contemporary audiences, it reflects a deliberate move to maintain a sense of artisanal, hand-crafted quality that defines the studio's portfolio under Maruyama's stewardship.
