Nezumi-kun no Chokki (TV)

Nezumi-kun no Chokki is a television adaptation based on the beloved Japanese picture book series created by author Yoshie Nakae and illustrator Noriko Ueno, which first debuted in 1974. The series centers on a small mouse named Nezumi-kun and his iconic red vest, exploring themes of friendship, insecurity, and social dynamics among animals. For decades, the series has served as a staple of early childhood literature in Japan, praised for its minimalist aesthetic and expressive, gentle character designs.

The 2026 television series adaptation, produced by Poplar, was developed to modernize the classic source material for a new generation of viewers. The production team focused on preserving Noriko Ueno’s distinct, sparse illustration style while translating the static imagery into fluid motion. By maintaining the quiet, observational tone of the original books, the adaptation was received as a faithful homage to the legacy of Nakae and Ueno, grounding its contemporary presentation in the established charm that has made the franchise a multi-generational favorite.
