Yuuta was 12-year-old boy, who had lost his father in the traffic accident one year ago. In the summer vacation, he visited a deserted dam deep in the mountains, where he had a good time with his father before.
Suddenly a thunder storm occurred and he slipped on the ground. He lost consciousness and woke up to find a girl and an unfamiliar village. He time-traveled 30 years and reached a village, which sank at the bottom of the dam.
This is Yuuta's precious memory of "another" summer vacation.

Where it came from
Nijiiro Hotaru: Eien no Natsuyasumi, known in English as Rainbow Fireflies: The Eternal Summer, was released by Toei Animation in 2012. The film is an adaptation of a 2006 novel by Masayuki Kawaguchi, which captures the nostalgia of 1970s rural Japan. The narrative follows a young boy who travels back in time to a village that is soon to be submerged by the construction of a dam, exploring themes of memory, childhood, and the fleeting nature of the past.
The film was directed by Konosuke Uda, a veteran animator known for his extensive work on the One Piece series. The visual design focused on a warm, hand-drawn aesthetic intended to evoke the atmosphere of a fading summer landscape. While the film received moderate attention for its heartfelt storytelling and visual fidelity to the source material, it remains a smaller, more intimate project within Toei Animation's extensive catalog, appreciated primarily by fans of period-piece anime and sentimental drama.
