Nijuushi no Hitomi

Nijuushi no Hitomi, or Twenty-Four Eyes, was released as a special edition in 1980, drawing from the profound cultural legacy of Sakae Tsuboi’s 1952 anti-war novel. This iteration served to reintroduce the poignant narrative of a teacher and her students on a remote island in the Seto Inland Sea during the rise of Japanese militarism to a new generation of readers and viewers. The design and presentation were crafted to evoke a sense of nostalgic melancholy, honoring the original work’s commitment to pacifism and the human cost of conflict.

The 1980 release followed in the footsteps of the acclaimed 1954 film adaptation, which had already cemented the story as a cornerstone of Japanese humanist cinema. By focusing on minimalist, emotive aesthetics, the publishers aimed to underscore the themes of innocence lost to history. Upon its arrival, the special edition was received as a respectful homage to Tsuboi’s vision, appreciated by critics and the public alike for its restrained design and its enduring relevance in reflecting on Japan's wartime past.
