Where it came from
Ninja, released in 2005 by D3, serves as a representative example of the budget-conscious original video animation (OVA) market that proliferated in Japan during the mid-2000s. Produced as a low-cost, direct-to-video production, the title was designed to capture interest among enthusiasts of traditional martial arts themes and the stylistic action tropes prevalent in the era's straight-to-home-media landscape.
The production relies on the common aesthetic conventions of mid-2000s digital animation, prioritizing accessible character archetypes over complex narrative depth. Like many releases from D3 during this period, the project was conceptualized to fill specific distribution slots in the competitive retail market, receiving limited critical attention upon its debut and ultimately serving as a footnote in the extensive history of direct-to-video anime.
