Where it came from
Nippon-ichi no Otoko no Tamashii, which translates to The Soul of the Number One Man in Japan, was produced by Studio DEEN in 1999 as a direct-to-video special. It emerged during a period when the studio was gaining recognition for its ability to handle both serious drama and quirky, niche character studies, often acting as a bridge between high-concept animation and more grounded storytelling.
The project was designed to explore themes of perseverance and the quintessential Japanese archetype of the indomitable spirit. While Studio DEEN is more widely known for long-running series like Ranma ½ or Fate/stay night, this particular title represents their output in the late 90s experimental OVA market. It was received as a modest, character-driven piece that relied on a specific aesthetic common to the era's digital-to-cel animation transition.
