Where it came from
Released in 2013, this special installment of Nintama Rantarou was produced by studio Ajiado to celebrate the enduring legacy of the long-running anime series, which first premiered in 1993. Based on the manga Rakudai Ninja Rantarou by Sōbē Amako, the franchise depicts the daily lives and training of young ninjas at the Ninjutsu Academy. This particular special maintains the series' characteristic blend of slapstick comedy, historical period elements, and heartwarming themes of friendship among students.
The production team at Ajiado aimed to preserve the simple, iconic aesthetic established by earlier seasons while updating the visual quality for a modern audience. The special was created to satisfy the dedicated fanbase's appetite for new adventures featuring the central trio of Rantarou, Kirimaru, and Shinbei. It reflects the franchise’s institutional status in Japanese children's animation, having evolved from a niche manga into a cultural staple that has consistently maintained its relevance through various adaptations and theatrical releases.
