Where it came from
Nirvana was established in 1987 in Aberdeen, Washington, formed by Kurt Cobain and Krist Novoselic. Emerging from the Pacific Northwest underground scene, the band became the vanguard of the grunge movement. Their 1991 major-label debut, Nevermind, unexpectedly propelled alternative rock into the mainstream, fueled by the cultural phenomenon of the lead single Smells Like Teen Spirit.
The band's aesthetic and sound were defined by a fusion of punk rock ethics and melodic pop sensibilities. Cobain's songwriting, characterized by introspective and often cynical lyrics, resonated deeply with a generation of disillusioned youth. Despite their brief tenure, which ended with Cobain's death in 1994, the group's sonic impact and cultural influence remain foundational to modern alternative music history.
