Where it came from
The concept of the non-reflection, often explored within the realms of speculative fiction and theoretical physics, serves as a narrative device used to challenge perceptions of reality and identity. Historically, these items are designed to manifest the absence of a mirror image, a motif popularized by authors such as Jorge Luis Borges and Bram Stoker to symbolize the detachment of a subject from their soul or their objective existence in the physical world.
The design of non-reflective objects relies on the manipulation of light-absorbing materials or complex metamaterials intended to negate the specular highlight expected by the human eye. While often conceptualized as mirrors coated in vantablack or dark matter simulations, these pieces are frequently treated as artistic inquiries into light and shadow, created by installation artists aiming to evoke a sense of ontological unease in the viewer.
