October, 1987, Autumn. In Suganami, Tokyo, there lives the Kinoshita family whereby the father draws very little pay out of his job as an ordinary salaryman. In order to cover expenses, he decides to let out the second floor of their apartment to earn additional rental income. One day, an obstinate-looking eldery dog, accompanied by a younger boy-dog, came knocking on their doors. The eldery dog addresses himself as Norayama Kuroyoshi and introduces his grandson as Norakuro. The former wants to open a detective agency and intends to rent the unit for their office. He will be the president of the investigative bureau while Norakuro-kun will be the director. He will also recruit one of the Kinoshita's sons, Keita-kun, as his employee and their advisor will be the girl-next-door, a high school student by the name of Rika Sawaguchi. On the third day since the official opening of the office, the telephone rang, a signal of a new case.

Where it came from
Norakuro-kun was produced by Studio Pierrot and aired in 1987 as a reimagining of the classic Norakuro character, originally created by Suiho Tagawa in 1931. While the original manga depicted a stray black-and-white dog navigating the Imperial Japanese Army, this 1987 adaptation shifted the focus to a more civilian, comedic setting, transforming the protagonist into a young boy who retains the dog-like features and iconic black-and-white patches of the source material.
The character design for this series was intended to bridge the gap between pre-war Japanese comics and the vibrant, high-energy animation style typical of late 1980s television. By placing the stoic, historically rooted character of Norakuro into a contemporary urban environment, the show sought to maintain the legacy of Tagawa's work for a new generation. It was received as a nostalgic yet accessible update, serving as a significant cultural touchstone for viewers familiar with the long-standing history of the character in Japanese media.
