The anime is based on Kazuo Hara's comedy manga in which mascot characters live and work among humans. Agencies have been set up to train mascots to babysit children and then to place the mascots within families. Noramimi is one such mascot at the Hello Kids branch office #59. Unfortunately, no family wants to adopt a mascot born from a demon (oni) family, so he is stuck living at the agency.

Where it came from
Noramimi was produced by TMS Entertainment and first aired in 2008 as an adaptation of the manga series by Kazumi Kazui. The series revolves around the eponymous character, a stray shape-shifting creature who lives in a shelter for mythical beings and waits to be adopted by a human owner. It emerged during a period when Japanese animation studios were increasingly exploring short-form, slice-of-life storytelling, focusing on whimsical character dynamics and gentle humor rather than high-stakes action.
The character design reflects the minimalist and expressive aesthetic of the original source material, emphasizing the versatility of Noramimi’s form as he attempts to please potential adopters. Directed by Hiroshi Nishikiori, the series was crafted to appeal to a broad audience through its episodic structure and earnest themes of companionship. It was received as a charming, understated addition to the landscape of late-night experimental animation, praised for its unique premise and its warm, reflective approach to the bond between pets and owners.
