Where it came from
Norman the Snowman: Nagareboshi no Furu Yoru ni, released in 2016, is the second installment in the stop-motion film series produced by Explorers Japan. The project was conceived to showcase the meticulous artistry of stop-motion animation, utilizing hand-crafted puppets and detailed miniature sets to create a cozy, winter-themed atmosphere. It follows the narrative of a boy and a snowman as they embark on a journey to witness a meteor shower, emphasizing themes of friendship and the wonder of the natural world.
The film was directed by Takeshi Yashiro, a prominent figure in contemporary Japanese stop-motion animation known for his tactile and warm visual style. Yashiro’s approach focuses on the inherent charm of physical materials, intentionally leaving the subtle imperfections of the puppets visible to ground the audience in the warmth of the animation. Upon its release, the film was well-received within the animation community for its aesthetic depth and technical precision, further cementing the studio's reputation for high-quality, artisanal storytelling.
