Where it came from
Nyuru Nyuru!! KAKUSEN-kun emerged in 2013 as a surreal short-form comedy anime produced by Yomiuri TV. The series centered on the bizarre life of Kakusen-kun, an anthropomorphic skin pore plug, offering a subversive and intentionally offbeat take on the slice-of-life genre. Its creation reflected a trend in Japanese late-night television for experimental, low-budget animation that prioritized absurd humor and quirky character designs over traditional narrative structure.
The character design leaned heavily into the 'yuru-chara' or mascot-inspired aesthetic, utilizing simplistic, rubber-hose-style animation to emphasize its comical premise. Developed with a satirical edge regarding skincare culture and modern urban anxieties, the series was received as a niche cult curiosity. While it did not achieve mainstream global recognition, it gained a devoted following among enthusiasts of experimental web-style anime for its deadpan delivery and unconventional protagonist.
