Where it came from
Occult Academy, known in Japan as Seikimatsu Occult Gakuin, was produced as part of the Aniplex-led Anime no Chikara project in 2010. This initiative aimed to create original anime series from scratch rather than relying on existing manga or light novel source material. The specials were released as supplemental episodes included with the home video releases, serving to flesh out the eccentric tone and supernatural mysteries established in the main narrative.
The series was directed by Tomohiko Itoh and featured character designs by A-1 Pictures. The project was intended to blend comedy with occult tropes set in a 1999 setting, focusing on the countdown to a prophesied apocalypse. These specials are noted by fans of the genre for maintaining the polished aesthetic typical of Aniplex productions from that era, providing deeper character moments that were otherwise constrained by the tight runtime of the primary television broadcast.
