Where it came from
Oh Yoko! was released as the penultimate track on John Lennon’s 1971 album, Imagine. Recorded at his home studio in Tittenhurst Park, the song serves as a buoyant, piano-driven ode to his wife, Yoko Ono. Coming at a time when the dissolution of The Beatles was still a fresh wound in the public consciousness, the track reflects Lennon's desire to focus on his personal life and newfound creative partnership, utilizing a catchy, pop-forward structure that contrasted with the more politically charged tracks on the record.
The song was produced by Lennon, Phil Spector, and Yoko Ono, featuring a distinctive honky-tonk piano performance by Nicky Hopkins. Its arrangement, defined by a simple, repetitive chorus and harmonica fills, was crafted to evoke the lighthearted, optimistic spirit Lennon felt during his early years living in New York. While not released as a single in the United Kingdom, it became a beloved fan favorite and a staple of the Imagine album, often cited for its accessibility and sincere, unadorned expression of affection.
