Ojamajo Doremi: Owarai Gekijou

Ojamajo Doremi: Owarai Gekijou, or Ojamajo Doremi: Comedy Theater, was released in 2019 by Toei Animation as a series of short, humorous ONA (original net animation) clips. Produced to celebrate the twentieth anniversary of the original magical girl franchise, these shorts served as a lighthearted bridge leading up to the release of the feature film Looking for Magical Doremi. The series features the original cast of young witches engaging in slapstick humor and everyday antics, designed to evoke nostalgia for the series' long-time fanbase while highlighting the comedic dynamics of the characters.

The character designs were overseen by Yoshihiko Umakoshi, who has been the primary character designer for the franchise since its 1999 debut. His goal for these shorts was to retain the signature expressive and rounded aesthetic that defined the series, while utilizing simplified animation to facilitate quick, gag-based storytelling. The reception was focused on the warmth of seeing the original voice cast return to their roles, with the project being viewed as a successful, low-stakes tribute that bridged the gap between the original television run and the modern film installment.
