Okaeri

Okaeri is a poignant stop-motion short film directed by Tomoyasu Murata, produced under the Tomoyasu Murata Company. Released in 2004, the film serves as a deeply personal meditation on loss, memory, and the passage of time. Murata utilized his signature handcrafted puppet animation style to create a tactile, melancholic atmosphere, drawing on the traditional Japanese aesthetic of the 'mono no aware'—the pathos of things—to explore the emotional weight of returning home to a changed environment.

The production process for Okaeri is characterized by the meticulous construction of intricate, miniature sets and expressive character puppets that define Murata’s studio style. The film was well-received within independent animation circles for its deliberate pacing and atmospheric sound design, which eschews excessive dialogue in favor of evocative visual storytelling. It remains a hallmark of contemporary Japanese stop-motion, celebrated for its ability to convey profound existential themes through the deliberate, physical labor of puppet animation.
