Where it came from
Ojisan to Marshmallow originated as a popular web manga series by the author Rekomaru Otoi before being adapted into a short-form anime by the studio Creators in Pack in 2016. The narrative centers on Hige-san, a middle-aged office worker whose intense, almost absurd love for marshmallows becomes the primary catalyst for his interactions with his younger coworker, Wakabayashi. The series was produced during a period of rising popularity for brief, character-driven anime shorts that highlighted mundane workplace dynamics through a comedic and lighthearted lens.
The character design for Hige-san captures the aesthetic of the original source material, emphasizing a visual contrast between his rugged, stubbly appearance and his soft, childlike obsession with confections. The animation style maintained a simple, expressive palette to complement the show's conversational pacing. Upon its release, the series was well-received for its gentle humor and the wholesome, unconventional dynamic between the two protagonists, finding a dedicated niche audience who appreciated its subversion of typical office romance tropes.
