Okashi na Okashi na Hoshi no Kuni

Released in 1982 by Toei Animation, Okashi na Okashi na Hoshi no Kuni—translated as The Wonderful Galaxy of Oz—was a distinctive experimental animated film. The project originated during a period of transition for Toei, as the studio sought to explore artistic narratives outside of its traditional heroic action and giant robot staples. It stands as a notable example of early 1980s Japanese animation that blended classic Western literary themes with the surreal, dreamlike aesthetic prevalent in the era's avant-garde animation scene.

The film's visual design is widely credited to the influential artist and illustrator Shigeru Tamura, whose work is characterized by soft, watercolor-inspired textures and whimsical, melancholic environments. Tamura aimed to distance the film from the high-octane visual language of concurrent anime, opting instead for a contemplative and atmospheric experience. While it remains a niche title in Toei's extensive catalog, it is frequently cited by animation historians as a unique aesthetic departure that prioritized artistic vision over commercial tropes.
