Old City Ward

Old City Ward originated as a foundational set piece within the tabletop roleplaying game supplement line for the fantasy setting of Mordheim, published by Games Workshop in the late 1990s. It was designed to provide modular, immersive urban terrain that reflected the grim, decaying aesthetic of a city consumed by wyrdstone corruption, allowing players to recreate the dense, multi-level skirmishes central to the game's brutal combat system.

The design aesthetic was spearheaded by the internal Citadel design team, who focused on capturing a ruined, gothic architectural style that contrasted sharply with the cleaner high-fantasy motifs popular at the time. By utilizing intricate plastic injection molding and modular building frames, the set achieved a level of verticality and structural detail that was highly regarded by the hobby community for its versatility and its ability to anchor the narrative atmosphere of the game.
