Old Master Q & "San-T"

Old Master Q, or Lao Fu Zi, is a quintessential figure in Hong Kong popular culture, originating as a comic strip character created by Alfonso Wong in the 1960s. The character's enduring appeal stems from his satirical commentary on the rapidly changing social landscape of Hong Kong, blending traditional Chinese values with the anxieties and humor of urban life. The 2001 film 'Old Master Q 2001' serves as a notable adaptation that integrates live-action with computer-generated imagery, reflecting the turn-of-the-millennium fascination with digital effects.

The film was produced during a period when the character was being revitalized for a new generation, moving beyond the static panels of the printed page to the cinematic screen. Directed by Herman Yau and featuring Nicholas Tse and Cecilia Cheung, the production utilized a mix of animation and performance to capture the whimsical spirit of Wong's designs. While the transition of the character into 3D animation received mixed critiques for its visual polish, the film remains a significant marker in the cross-media evolution of the Old Master Q franchise, highlighting its capacity to adapt across different technological eras.
