Where it came from
Once Upon a Time... Life, originally titled Il était une fois... la vie, debuted in 1987 as part of the celebrated educational animation franchise created by Albert Barillé. Produced by the French studio Procidis, the series was conceived during a period when educational television sought to marry rigorous scientific accuracy with high-concept entertainment, aiming to explain the complexities of the human body to children through anthropomorphized cells and bodily functions.
The distinctive visual style was defined by illustrator Jean Barbaud, who crafted the iconic character designs that remain recognizable decades later. Barbaud focused on creating clear, personality-driven archetypes for blood cells and viruses, a choice that proved instrumental in the show's enduring success. The series received widespread critical acclaim for its pedagogical utility and was translated into dozens of languages, cementing its status as a staple of international children's programming.
