On Meg’s seventeenth birthday, she learns that she only has one year left to live. Her mentor—the Eternal Witch, Faust—explains that she is cursed and the only way to save herself is to grow a seed of life using one thousand tears of joy. Of course, such tears aren’t easy to come by. As Meg begins her quest, she finds herself drawn into the lives of her friends and neighbors in ways she never imagined. By sharing their burdens and using her magic to comfort them, she learns how precious those moments of connection can be even in the face of death.

Where it came from
Once Upon a Witch's Death, produced by Kadokawa and scheduled for release in 2025, is an anime television series adaptation based on the popular light novel series written by Sakae Esuno. The production emerges from a contemporary landscape of dark fantasy storytelling, focusing on the intersection of supernatural elements and narrative-driven drama. Its development reflects the studio's ongoing commitment to translating complex light novel source material into visually distinct animation projects that cater to an audience interested in atmospheric, character-centric mystery.
The creative direction of the series aims to capture the thematic weight of Esuno's original work, which is noted for its intricate plot structure and unsettling tone. The production team has sought to maintain the visual fidelity of the source illustrations, utilizing modern character design techniques to emphasize the protagonist's journey. Early reception has been characterized by anticipation among the existing fan base of the novels, who have followed the series' expansion from literary form to the medium of television animation.
