Synopsis

Long ago, there lived a young man named Yosuke in the village of Shiiba in Hyuuga.

"I want enough money and possessions to live a luxurious life without having to work"

Yohei abandoned his job in his impoverished village, where only barnyard millet, oxtail millet and beans could be grown. He fled into the mountains, where one night he witnessed a strange sight.

A blue ogre clinging to a large cedar tree split its back, began to shed its skin and quickly transformed into a red ogre. Yosuke stole the shed skin, wore it and began committing crimes in the village.

However, when he tried to take off the skin, he couldn't get it off no matter what he did...

Provenance

Where it came from

Onigara was produced by Mushi Production in 1994, emerging during a period when the studio—founded by Osamu Tezuka—was exploring darker, more experimental thematic territory in its original video animation projects. The work reflects the studio's attempt to bridge traditional cel-based aesthetic sensibilities with the burgeoning mature-audience OVA market of the mid-1990s, focusing on atmospheric storytelling and distinct character designs that prioritized moody, visceral expressions over the polished mainstream styles of the era.

The production was characterized by a collaborative effort to evoke a sense of folklore-inspired dread, utilizing the narrative freedom inherent in the OVA format to bypass the constraints of television broadcasting standards. While it remains a niche entry in the studio's extensive catalog, the design language was lauded by connoisseurs of the period for its commitment to fluid, hand-drawn sequences and an uncompromising visual direction that sought to challenge the viewer's expectations of the medium at the time.
