Onimusha

Onimusha, released as an original net animation in 2023, was developed by the studio Sublimation under the direction of Takashi Miike and Shinya Sugai. The series serves as a modern adaptation of the long-running video game franchise originally created by Capcom, transposing the narrative into the early Edo period. The production was notable for its distinct visual style, which utilized a blend of 3D computer-generated character models integrated with hand-drawn 2D backgrounds, aiming to replicate the atmospheric tension of the classic samurai-themed games.

The animation design sought to evoke the gritty, supernatural aesthetic that defined the original PlayStation 2 titles, featuring a digital recreation of the iconic Japanese actor Toshiro Mifune as the primary protagonist, Musashi Miyamoto. Upon release, the series received mixed critical reception, with praise directed at its faithful incorporation of the source material's signature swordplay and supernatural themes, though some viewers noted the departure from traditional animation techniques in favor of the studio's specialized CG-hybrid approach.
