Where it came from
Onmyouji: Heian Monogatari was released in 2018 as a spin-off ONA series based on the popular mobile game Onmyouji by NetEase. Developed by the studio Thundray, the series was designed to expand upon the rich aesthetic and folklore-inspired narratives of the original source material, focusing on the character-driven tales of the Heian period. It sought to capture the elegance and supernatural atmosphere of the game through a polished, episodic format that appealed to existing fans of the franchise's distinct art style.
The animation direction for the project emphasized a stylized, painterly quality meant to evoke traditional Japanese ink wash paintings and classical woodblock prints. By leveraging the established visual language of the game, the creative team aimed to maintain thematic consistency while providing deeper insight into the lore of the spirits and practitioners known as Onmyoji. The series was generally well-received by the existing player base for its faithfulness to the game's atmospheric tone and character designs.
