Original Video Romance Animation

The 1984 production Dallos is widely recognized as the first direct-to-video anime, or Original Video Animation (OVA). It emerged during a pivotal moment in the Japanese animation industry when the medium sought to bypass the constraints of television scheduling and network censorship. By targeting a niche market of home video enthusiasts, the producers could explore more mature narratives and higher production values than were previously accessible to a mass broadcast audience.

The project was spearheaded by Studio Pierrot and directed by Mamoru Oshii and Hisayuki Toriyama. The design philosophy focused on creating a gritty, science-fiction aesthetic that leaned into the 'space opera' genre popular at the time. While the animation techniques were experimental for the new format, the series served as a foundational proof-of-concept for the OVA model, which would soon define the 1980s and 1990s as a golden age for auteur-driven Japanese animation.
