Otohime CONNECTION

Otohime CONNECTION was released in 1991 as an original video animation (OVA) produced by the Japanese retail giant Animate. It emerged during a period of high experimentation in the OVA market, where animation studios frequently sought to adapt popular manga or create standalone stories that could capitalize on the growing domestic market for home video releases. The production leans into the aesthetic and narrative tropes of early nineties science fiction and fantasy anime, reflecting the studio's broader efforts to expand its reach beyond traditional retail through original intellectual property.

The animation features character designs that adhere to the stylistic conventions of the era, focusing on the blend of magical elements and contemporary settings common in the genre at the time. As a specialized production, it remains a notable example of Animate's mid-career foray into direct-to-video content. While the title is relatively obscure compared to major franchises of the decade, it is frequently cited by collectors for its distinct visual identity and as a snapshot of the specific production values championed by Animate during the early nineties.
