Where it came from
Released in 2005 by the acclaimed studio Madhouse, the Otogi-juushi Akazukin OVA served as an initial promotional pilot for what would later become a full-length television series. The project reimagined the classic Little Red Riding Hood fairy tale within a high-fantasy, action-oriented framework, blending magical girl tropes with intense combat sequences to appeal to a demographic interested in subverted folklore.
The character designs were crafted to emphasize a contrast between the whimsical, storybook aesthetic of the protagonist and the darker, more aggressive nature of the overarching conflict. While the OVA was primarily intended to gauge audience interest and establish the visual tone of the franchise, its reception among animation enthusiasts was noted for the fluid, high-quality fight choreography that became a hallmark of Madhouse productions during this era.
