Otoko wa Tsurai yo: Torajirou Wasurenagusa

Otoko wa Tsurai yo: Torajirou Wasurenagusa, the 48th installment in the long-running film series, was released in 1995 rather than 1998, though it stands as the final entry featuring lead actor Kiyoshi Atsumi. Directed by series veteran Yoji Yamada, the film serves as a poignant conclusion to the saga of Torajiro Kuruma, a kind-hearted but wandering peddler. The production was marked by the declining health of Atsumi, who passed away shortly after filming, imbuing the narrative with a sense of finality that was not originally intended for the character's journey.

The film's design reflects the series' signature blend of traditional Japanese social commentary and sentimental comedy. Yamada worked to maintain the familiar aesthetic of the Shibamata district while incorporating the melancholic tone of Torajiro’s fading adventures. Upon release, the film was received as an emotional farewell to a national cultural icon, cementing the series' place in cinema history as the longest-running film franchise with a single lead actor.
