Otou-san

Otou-san, also known as the White Dog, first appeared in television advertisements for the Japanese telecommunications company SoftBank in 2007. Produced with the broadcast sensibilities of NHK-style national messaging but for corporate marketing, the character was conceptualized as the patriarch of the Shirato family. He is depicted as a dignified, anthropomorphic Hokkaido dog who communicates through brief, deadpan human-voiced quips, creating a stark contrast between his canine appearance and his role as the head of the household.

The character design leveraged the cultural popularity of the Hokkaido dog breed in Japan, choosing a neutral, composed expression to facilitate the comedic timing required for the commercials. The campaign was an immediate cultural phenomenon, leading to extensive merchandising, including plush toys and desk accessories. The character's longevity in Japanese pop culture is attributed to this minimalist design, which allowed the brand to maintain a recognizable, consistent mascot while satirizing traditional Japanese family dynamics.
