Where it came from
Otousan wa Ai no Hito is a 2016 original net animation produced to promote the release of the Japanese film 'Sanninme no Satsujin' and celebrate the works of director Hirokazu Kore-eda. The project was conceived as a poignant, short-form narrative that explores the intricate dynamics of fatherhood and domestic affection, serving as a stylistic extension of Kore-eda's preoccupation with family structures and the emotional weight of memory.
The animation features a delicate, minimalist aesthetic designed to mirror the understated humanism found in the director's cinematic filmography. By utilizing soft character designs and a restrained color palette, the creators aimed to evoke a sense of quiet intimacy that resonates with viewers familiar with the director's broader body of work. Upon its release, it was received as a gentle, contemplative piece that successfully captured the atmosphere of his live-action storytelling within an animated medium.
