Ou-sama ni Natta Kitsune

Ou-sama ni Natta Kitsune, known internationally as The Fox Who Became King, is a 1996 animated feature film produced by the Japanese advertising and communications giant Dentsu. The project emerged from a period of Japanese animation seeking to blend traditional folklore sensibilities with modern production techniques. It was crafted as a family-oriented feature, focusing on the whimsical transformation of a fox into a ruler, a narrative trope that explores themes of identity, responsibility, and the nature of leadership.

The film is notable for its distinct aesthetic that adheres to the established visual language of mid-nineties Japanese television and theatrical animation. While Dentsu acted as the primary production entity, the film was designed to appeal to a broad demographic by balancing moral storytelling with stylized character animation. Upon its release, it was received as a modest contribution to the era’s diverse animation landscape, often noted by genre enthusiasts for its charming, fable-like structure rather than its technical experimentalism.
