Where it came from
The Royal Space Force: The Wings of Honneamise pilot film was produced in 1985 as a proof-of-concept project for the fledgling studio GAINAX. Conceived by founders including Hideaki Anno and Yoshiyuki Sadamoto, the pilot was instrumental in convincing Bandai to fund the full-length feature film, which would eventually become a landmark in animation history for its intricate world-building and high technical standards.
The design of the pilot reflects the studio's ambition to create a mature, grounded science fiction aesthetic, moving away from the prevailing trends of the era. The animation quality and character design were crafted to showcase the team's meticulous attention to detail, particularly in mechanical design and atmospheric lighting, which set the tone for the finished 1987 masterpiece and established GAINAX as a formidable creative force in the industry.
