Over Her Curtain

Over Her Curtain, directed by Shoko Hara during her tenure at Tokyo University of the Arts (Geidai), emerged from the school's renowned animation program. The film is characterized by its experimental approach to visual storytelling, blending traditional techniques with a surreal, introspective narrative that explores the boundaries between memory and physical space. It was created as part of the university's mission to foster auteur-driven animation, encouraging students to develop distinct aesthetic voices that challenge conventional commercial tropes.

The film's visual design is marked by a minimalist yet evocative palette, which Shoko Hara utilized to mirror the emotional fragmentation of the protagonist. Upon its release, the project gained recognition within the international festival circuit for its evocative atmosphere and the precision of its digital-traditional hybrid animation. Critics frequently highlighted the work as a quintessential example of Geidai's pedagogical focus on personal expression and technical mastery, solidifying its place in the lineage of notable Japanese independent animated shorts.
