Where it came from
Overlord began as a popular web novel series written by Kugane Maruyama before being adapted into a light novel series illustrated by so-bin. The television anime adaptation, produced by the acclaimed studio Madhouse and directed by Naoyuki Itō, premiered in 2015. It was developed during a period when the isekai genre was gaining significant mainstream traction, focusing on a protagonist who becomes trapped in a dying virtual reality game.
Madhouse sought to capture the series' dark fantasy atmosphere and the elaborate, grotesque character designs established by so-bin. The production emphasized the contrast between the protagonist's immense power and his internal detachment as a skeletal lich. The series was well-received for its unique perspective on power dynamics and its departure from traditional hero tropes, eventually leading to multiple sequels and feature films.
