Animated graduation work by Hirota Hirata.
There was no "color" in the boy's world. One day the boy finds an old palette in a closet. When the palette opened, a little girl with colored eyes appeared from inside. The things she touched were magically colored one after another, and the boy, fascinated by the "colors" reflected in the black and white world, ran after the girl. "Show me the color, you just have to do it again."

Where it came from
Palette: Shikisai no Shoujo is a short film released in 2011, serving as a distinct project within the broader Japanese independent animation landscape of the early 2010s. Produced as a showcase for visual storytelling, the film explores themes of color and identity, reflecting a period where small-scale, artist-driven animation studios were increasingly utilizing digital techniques to achieve painterly, ethereal aesthetics.
The film was helmed by director and animator Eiji Abiko, who sought to prioritize atmospheric world-building over traditional narrative structures. By focusing on the interplay between light and shifting color palettes, Abiko aimed to evoke an impressionistic experience for the viewer. Upon its release, it was primarily recognized within international film festival circuits for its technical proficiency and its departure from the high-octane tropes common in commercial anime at the time.
